At first glance when arriving in the Empordà area , most noticeable are a series of stone built villages piled upon a hill or hiding behind low mountains .
First to be seen is a castle in the mountain range of Montgrí and if we keep looking, next to it appears the palace of the Empuries’ Count in Bellcaire d’Empordà . Around it and as part of the ancient medieval frontier lie a series of fortified villages Palau-sator, Pals, Peratallada, La Tallada d’Empordà and also the ones pertaining to the bishopric , Corçà, La Bisbal d’Empordà, Rupià, that in some cases still preserve part of their ancient fortifications .
The importance of other sites should be note, like the ancient medieval market of Monells or the old capital of the County of Empúries in Castelló d’Empúries , also in the inland area of la Garrotxa, the village of Besalú .
